Wasima 2003

Wasima had a good year too. She helped Ahblazah through his novice endurance year and showed him the ropes. We did The Looe valley 38km miles and Quantocks in Spring 40km with Blaze. Then Brendon Hills 65km in preparation for the 75 mile ride at The Golden Horseshoe. She passed all these with a Grade 1 and no problems.

The Golden Horseshoe 120km (75 miles) was our first go at it. It was the toughest ride we had ever done together. The going was either very stony, very steep or very sticky on the moor. There was no respite, it was tough. However that is what endurance is about, seeing what the challenge is and overcoming it.
She came in with a pulse of 44 throughout with no penalties. She is not a hill horse, she walks hills and paces herself, so Exmoor and Dartmoor are not her favourite places.
Wizzy did not enjoy it but star that she is came in sound and passed with a Bronze award. I won the “Veteran Riders Award” for the oldest successful rider which was very pleasing.
We then did The Minions 32km 6/7/03 and West Moor 48km 3/8/03 with Ahblazah which got him through Novice to Intermediate. We did The Exmoor Challenge 65km 24/8/03 (40 miles) in preparation for Three Rivers 7/9/03

Three Rivers Ride 130km (80 miles)

The last ride of the season for us. It went really well and Wasima enjoyed it. We missed some markers at one point so ended up doing 87 miles. At the end we were on Salisbury racecourse and raced in the last furlong. Wasima flattened as we galloped to the finish. All I said was “Go Wizzy”! We ended up 3rd with a final pulse of 51/48 and “A”s on the vet sheet.
Wasima won the coveted Hewett Challenge Best Condition Trophy. We were thrilled. Wasima looked good, the weather had been kind and it was a wonderful end to the season.
